about - a brief history of LEP studios
|
|
LEP Studios is run by Danish-Irish writer-director David Noel Bourke who frequently collaborates with other filmmakers, actors and producers.
Starting out in the film scene, very humbly, back in Denmark in 2001. A tiny underground movie called "Last Exit" was shot,
just for fun, but which crazily gathered a cult audience who loved its no holds barred, raw, splattery story. It sold out screenings
in Cinemateket Copenhagen, starring Gry Bay "All About Anna" it ended up being distributed all over the world.
No production values, no crew, no funding from DFI, no worries! One US critic even labelled it as:
"possibly the best bang-for-the-buck in cinema history".
What the hell? Check it out on wikipedia:

Boosted by this we made a couple of short movies (including The Woods with Claire Ross-Brown "Klovn") and prepared our next feature film
No Right Turn. No Right Turn was an ambitious low budget noir pastiche. With a strange little script and a bunch of talented yet unknown actors,
it attracted producers Peter Aalbęk from Zentropa, Fridthjof film, Supersonic-Duckling, Axis Mundi Studios.
With the confidence of the backing of good producers, a small budget, we went into production late 2006.
It was very very hard. Due to the difficulty of the demanding script, one of the coldest winters in 50 years, Laura Bach "Den Som Dręber",
suddenly getting pregnant (can you see it in the film?), most of the film crew coming down with the flu, the props disappearing, money running
short - the film took 4 years to complete and it's a miracle it got finished.
But it did get finished thanks to a lot of hard work by a lot of talented filmmakers. One scene in the movie there is a difference of 4 years
between shots. Try find that one!
No Right Turn was officially selected at
CPH:PIX, where it had its world premiere.
It screened twice in the New Danish Talent section of the festival.
Shortly afterwards it was picked up by a local distributor and then found a home in the US. It sold well and was really cool.
The critical consensus was the movie was "a breath of fresh air for the Danish film industry".
It got 4 stars in Berlingske (Danish - small translation below)

Berlingske Tidende:
"No Right Turn...more fun, more sexy and more entertaining than other Danish films currently in the cinemas"

We needed a breather after all that!
Fresh from the success of all this, LEP Studios worked on more exciting scripts. One script, the Danish language White Pig
is close to go into production. A murder-come-thriller, this will be our biggest and most ambitious feature film project yet ...
and we are very excited about it.
Stay tuned.
